We are really proud to be 1% for the Planet Members. Last month (Earth Month) 1% for the Planet started a campaign called 360 for the Planet which provide facts on topics such as climate change, pollution, food, water, land and wildlife, which can be read below:
- Land: more than 32 million acres of forest are being lost every year
- Food: every year, 30% of all food produced is lost or wasted
- Water: 30 billion tons of urban sewage is discharged into our waters every year
- Climate Change: Sea levels are rising at their fastest rates in 2,000 years
- Pollution: In 30 years, the ocean will contain more plastic in weight than fish
- Wildlife: Global wildlife populations could drop by 67% as early as 2020
Let’s Turn This Thing Around: Sustainability Services!
Their message was simple…Let’s turn this thing around! So, what are we doing at Emerger Strategies to turn this thing around? Well, our purpose is to protect what we love and our mission it to build purpose-driven brands that solve environmental problems. This means that our mission is to help other businesses to increase their growth while minimizing the environmental impact of their operations and products so we guide businesses that want to turn this thing around, but lack the sustainability expertise. The nature of our business is helping to turn this thing around!
Let’s Turn This Thing Around: Give Back!
We are also a 1% for the Planet Member which means we donate 1% of our annual sales to environmental nonprofits: The Sustainability Institute and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. The Sustainability Institute (SI) is working tirelessly to make Charleston, SC a more sustainable place to live and work by addressing energy conservation which helps fight climate change. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) is working “to conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.” Additionally, BTT takes a science-based approach to conservation and is also helping to save the Everglades with its Fix Our Water initiative. Let’s Turn This Thing Around: Sustainable Operations!
At our offices we do everything we can to reduce GHG emissions (energy), minimize waste and conserve water. For example, we offset our GHG emissions by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits and installed LED bulbs; we compost all of our food waste and use it to make healthy soil for our organic garden and obviously we recycle; and we have installed faucets and shower heads that conserve water. Every little bit helps and we are ensuring that we are doing our part to help turn this thing around through our sustainable operations!
Let’s Turn This Thing Around: The Sustainable Angler!
Finally, we also use our blog and social media channels as a way to educate and create more awareness about issues that negatively impact our planet and fisheries because we want to protect what we love. We try to introduce core concepts and principles related to sustainable business, and I have created a blog series called “The Sustainable Angler” where I interview the biggest names in fly fishing and discuss such topics as population, policy and pollution and how they impact our fisheries and what you can do to take action. I hope my writing will inspire positive change to help turn this thing around!
