From Keep Fish Wet
Sustainability consulting firm Emerger Strategies recently launched the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance (FFCA), which is a collection of guides, shops, lodges, brands (and now nonprofits), who share the common belief that it is their responsibility to take action to solve the current climate crisis. Keep Fish Wet is the first nonprofit to join the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance by committing to go Carbon Neutral by 2030 in an effort to solve the climate crisis that threatens the fish that Alliance members depend for their livelihoods.
To date, the FFCA has twenty-two members including: Patagonia Fly Fish, Seigler Reels, Monic Fly Lines, Rep Your Water, Rock Treads, Crazy Creek Products, Tailwater Lodge, School of Trout, Emerald Water Anglers, Lary’s Fly & Supply, Low Tide Charters, True North Trout, Soul Fly Outfitters, Emerger Strategies, Craig Matthews, and Keep Fish Wet. Keep Fish Wet Executive Director, Sascha Clark Danylchuk had this to say about the decision in joining the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance: “We believe that as anglers, we need to do all we can to increase the resiliency of our fisheries. Whether it’s by using science-based best practices for catch-and-release, or committing to go Carbon Neutral, all these efforts contribute to creating stronger recreational fisheries.”
Emerger Strategies began the creation of its Fly Fishing Climate Alliance in 2019 in an attempt to provoke awareness and responsibility for sustainable business practices amongst members of the fly fishing community. Emerger Strategies President, Rick Crawford, decided to build the alliance because “Climate change is undoubtedly the single greatest threat to fisheries on the planet, and as an angler and a father, I am deeply concerned about the future of our planet and our fisheries. I decided to form the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance because I feel strongly that by working towards a common goal of achieving carbon neutrality, we can make a significant positive impact towards solving the climate crisis while leading by example. Who knows, maybe fly fishing can save the world?”
ABOUT KEEP FISH WET
Keep Fish Wet is a 501c3 nonprofit working to help anglers improve the outcome for each fish they release. Science shows that even small changes in how an angler catches, handles, and releases a fish can have positive outcomes once that fish swims away. Not only does using best practices increase survival rates of fish, but it also helps fish return to their normal behavior as quickly as possible after release. Using best practices for catch-and-release is a quick and effective way to put conservation in to practice.
