Sustainability Compliance for Fishing & Outdoor Brands

Emerger Strategies is Climate Neutral Certified

Posted on October 31, 2023

Today we’re celebrating we are officially Climate Neutral Certified. The process of becoming Climate Neutral Certified was a months-long effort to measure, reduce, and compensate for our brand’s carbon footprint. These are actions that all companies—and individuals—can and must take now to “flatten the curve” of carbon emissions.

I am really proud that Emerger Strategies is officially Climate Neutral Certified. Achieving Climate Neutral Certification is important because according to the latest climate science, we must halve global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 in order to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. However, as a father and an angler, I want to make sure we are doing our part to be part of the climate solution so that future generations have enough resources to meet their own needs. Additionally, as a founding member of the Fly Fishing Climate Alliance, Emerger Strategies is committed to net-zero emissions by 2050 in an effort to protect the wild fish and wild places that I love so dearly. Finally, it is also important to me personally to lead by example, and because we wouldn’t ask our clients to do anything we haven’t done ourselves.

We’re thrilled to join hundreds of Climate Neutral Certified brands in taking meaningful climate
action today.

What does it mean to be Climate Neutral Certified?

Climate Neutral (CN) is a nonprofit that helps companies measure, reduce, and offset their carbon footprint. To become certified through CN, we follow a three-step process: measure, reduce, and compensate.

Emerger Strategies’ 2022 Carbon Footprint: 11 mtCO2e

Step 1: Measure

The first step is to measure emissions across all of our activities, from direct emissions from our operations (Scope 1), to energy we purchase (Scope 2), to the indirect emissions associated with our supply chain (Scope 3).

Emission boundaries

Here’s how our emissions are categorized in some charts on this page. You can find more information on how these measurement boundaries work in our Standard.

Scope 1 Emissions: 1.43 tCO2e

Direct emissions under your company’s control, such as natural gas used to heat your office or diesel burnt in fleet vehicles.

Scope 2 Emissions: 5.15 tCO2e

Indirect emissions from energy (such as electricity) that occur elsewhere but you consume at your company facilities.

Scope 3 Emissions: 4.14 tCO2e

All other indirect emissions. Likely the greatest share of your emissions, covering different sources within your supply chain.

Step 2: Reduce

We are committed to reducing our 2022 Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions 50% by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2050. Below are a couple of steps we will take to help us stay in line with science-based targets:

  • We will also reduce our carbon footprint by implementing a policy for remote work 60% at our headquarters
  • We will replace our vehicle fleet (my car!) with an zero-emissions electric vehicle

We have some additional plans to reduce our carbon footprint, but these are our short-term plans to help us reduce our carbon footprint 50% by 2030.

Step 3: Compensate

Once we know our footprint, we purchased 12 carbon credits from the Manantiales Behr Wind Farm. By purchasing a carbon credit, one tonne of carbon is removed or prevented from entering the atmosphere. We purchase enough carbon credits to cover our total emissions in order to become carbon neutral.

What’s next?

We will continue pursuing Climate Neutral Certification going forward to communicating our efforts to our stakeholders annually. If you are a brand interested in becoming Climate Neutral Certified in 2024, we are also a Climate Neutral Open Certification Network Partner, which means we help your organization align to the Climate Neutral Standard and achieve certification, so contact us today!
