Sustainability Compliance for Fishing & Outdoor Brands

Why sustainability may be the smartest cost-cutting strategy for businesses in 2026 and beyond

American businesses are facing a perfect storm of rising costs.

Health insurance premiums alone climbed 6% in 2025, continuing several years of elevated increases and pushing average annual family coverage close to $27,000. Add inflation, elevated borrowing costs, tariffs, and volatile electricity prices, which increased 13% in 2025—and it’s no surprise that many companies are searching everywhere for ways to cut expenses just to survive.

But what if one of the most misunderstood business investments…was actually one of the most powerful tools for reducing costs and strengthening resilience?

That’s where sustainability comes in.

The surprising truth: sustainability can lower costs, not raise them

When budgets tighten, sustainability is often the first initiative placed on hold. It’s seen as a “nice-to-have” instead of a business necessity.

In reality, the opposite is often true. Smart sustainability strategies can help businesses:

In short, sustainability isn’t just about protecting the planet.
It’s about protecting your business.

Why I’m saying: “Don’t Hire This Sustainability Consultant”

As Emerger Strategies celebrates 10 years in business, we’re navigating the same economic pressures affecting every company—rising costs, tighter budgets, and increased uncertainty.

So I decided to take inspiration from Patagonia’s iconic “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign.

Because sometimes the most honest marketing message…is the one that feels a little backwards.

Here it is: Don’t hire this sustainability consultant.

Don’t hire us if:

  • You’re comfortable paying higher energy bills every year
  • Regulatory risk and potential fines don’t concern you
  • Losing retailer shelf space wouldn’t impact your business
  • You believe sustainability can’t drive profit or resilience

But…If you want to cut costs, reduce risk, strengthen retailer relationships, and future-proof your brand, then sustainability may be one of the smartest investments you can make.

Sustainability is resilience

Rising health insurance costs, inflation, and economic uncertainty are forcing businesses to rethink every expense. The companies that will thrive in this environment aren’t the ones that cut blindly.

They’re the ones that invest strategically—in efficiency, compliance, reputation, and long-term value.

That’s what real sustainability delivers. And that’s the work we’ve been proud to do for the past decade at Emerger Strategies.

A final thought (and a little humor)

To my friends at Patagonia—and to fellow sustainability consultants navigating a tough market—I hope this message lands with the spirit it’s intended:

Honest.
Hopeful.
And maybe a little funny.

And if your fishing or outdoor brand needs guidance on how to:

Send me a message. I’d be happy to help.

But until then…
