AFFTA Takes Steps to a Carbon Neutral IFTD by Measuring the Show’s Carbon Footprint

Posted on March 22, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

American Fly Fishing Trade Association

March 22, 2022. The American Fly Fishing Trade Association takes a significant first step in understanding its climate impact by measuring the carbon footprint of its trade show, the International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD) trade show which takes place in Salt Lake City, UT on March 30-April 1, 2022. AFFTA has hired the sustainable business consultancy, Emerger Strategies, to measure its carbon footprint to gain a better understanding of its climate impact and how it can execute strategies to reduce its carbon footprint.

Emerger Strategies is working with AFFTA to collect data, such as: building energy usage during IFTD, waste generated during the show, travel miles of attendees and hotel night stays to calculate IFTD’s carbon footprint, and then identify hotspots and find strategies to reduce its footprint.

AFFTA’s Executive Director, Lucas Bissett, had this to say about making the decision to measure IFTD’s carbon footprint, “AFFTA knows the importance of understanding the impact of our trade show and are very excited to lead the industry down this path to a more sustainable future. It is time we start to measure our footprint so we can do our best to reduce it. Understanding what we need to do is going to educate our decisions around the future of industry gatherings moving forward.”

Rick Crawford, President of Emerger Strategies, said, “I am proud to see AFFTA lead by example and act on climate. You can’t manage what you are not measuring, so by first understanding its carbon footprint, we can then begin the work of reducing IFTD’s carbon footprint because the science is clear and the future of our planet is dependent upon rapidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” Stay tuned for the first IFTD Carbon Footprint Report, which will be released sometime in May 2022.
